On Racial Injustice and Restorative Action: A Conversation with Spencer Crew and Derrick Johnson moderated by Stefan Wheelock

Wednesday, April 14, 2021 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM EDT

"On Racial Injustice and Restorative Action: A Conversation with Spencer Crew and Derrick Johnson moderated by Stefan Wheelock" is a virtual event sponsored by the Center for Humanities Research. The discussion will celebrate the life and work of Mason’s preeminent public historian and former director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Spencer Crew. Dr. Crew and NAACP President Derrick Johnson will dialogue about the lessons we might learn from America’s racial past while offering strategies for restorative justice in an era of racial hostilities.

The exchange will focus on four key concerns.
  • How did slavery help set into motion America’s long narrative of racial inequality and injustice?
  • How do the legacies of slavery persist through our current circumstances in many quarters of American society?
  • How might coming to terms with a tragic past help generate concrete policies and initiatives for a more racially just society?
  • What can we do to “repair” the damage done by one of America’s early regimes of violent racist subjugation?
